In this article, we are going to talk about what is CDN, how does CDN works, and what are the uses of content delivery networks, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of using CDN on your website.

What is CDN, and how does it work?

The full form of CDN is Content Delivery Network, and first of all, let’s talk about what CDN is.

Assume your website is hosted on Cloudways in India and the Cloudways data center is in India. If someone visits your website from the United States, your website will open very slowly for them because the request will come from the United States to the Indian data center, where it will take that data from India and then the user will see your website, which makes your website slow.

But, in this case, how does CDN work? CDN saves a copy of your website in temporary memory at each of its data centers all over the world, and whenever a visitor visits your website, the request does not come to India, and it will come to their nearest data center. For example, if a visitor visits your website from New York, then the data will be visible on the website from the data center of  New York. This means that the data is fetched from their nearest data center.

Because of this, time for travel and communication is reduced due to the fact that the content is delivered to the visitor much faster. The role of a CDN is to save multiple copies of your website in temporary memory.

Let’s understand it well from the above image. Before connecting CDN to your website, you see that multiple users are requesting the same server, but after connecting the website through CDN, the data is fetched from the nearest data center of the visitor. Due to this, the request does not come to your main server and your website does not slow down.

Advantage of Using Content Delivery Network (CDN)

Let us now discuss the advantage of connecting a CDN to a website.

  • The first advantage of connecting to a CDN is that you can install free SSL on your website, and after that, your website will always open on https.
  • Whenever there is more traffic on our website, the website goes down. The reason is that our website is hosted on one CPU but due using a CDN, the request is routed to the nearest data center rather than the server, which means our website is not down.

  • The third advantage of using a CDN is that your website remains very secure. In this case, malware attacks are being talked about. In some cases, your website is attacked by a brute force attack. Attempts are made to bypass login and send bot traffic, but if your website is connected to a CDN, you will not face this problem because CDN prevents all these things itself and handles it from its side.

  • The fourth advantage of using a CDN is that the user experience gets improved. Due to the high speed of your website, no user returns. This is due to which the bounce rate of your website is also managed. When the website is slow, the bounce rate is badly affected.

Aside from that, there are numerous advantages to using a CDN, which is why you should connect your website to a CDN by default. Cloudflare is a website where you can connect your website to the CDN for free and take all the benefits of the CDN.
